Book Review: Rosemary’s Gravy – The Proof is in the Tasting

Rosemary's Gravy

I think Amazon recommend this book because of my slight obsession with Jana Deleon’s Miss Fortune Mystery series, and am I ever happy they did. The blurb made the book sound a bit mickey mouse but I was pleasantly surprised by this little gem. It won’t be winning a Pulitzer any time soon but it is certainly a fun afternoon read, especially down at the beach or in front of the fire place.

The Plot

Rosemary Field is a personal holistic chef to a spoilt up-and-coming Hollywood rom-com superstar Amber Patrick. It’s not her dream job but it helps pay the bills, and her parents’ debt. She’s secretly gagging after Felix, the stepson, but would never act on her feelings. In an unfortunate turn of events, Amber ends up dead. Murdered. And guess who the prime suspect is?

Rosemary would never have seen her life taking this turn but it would seem that it’s up to her and one of LAPD’s finest to solve the case.

The Writing Style

Smooth, funny, charming and highly entertaining. This is a short novel but it is fast paced and fun to follow the characters unravel the mystery. It’s a standard “whodunit” caper but the sophistication of the writing and the easy wit makes this a pleasure to read. Miller’s sarcasm is balanced and Rosemary’s sass guides the reader to just how sheltered her home life was growing up. Though Rosemary lives and works in L.A., she isn’t conventionally worldly-wise. She’s educated and has lived alone for a while but she seems to be a little slow on the uptake at times. Other times, she lets her mouth get the better of her.

“Actors don’t eat anyway. They nibble. In extreme cases they just inhale deeply.”

The Review

I loved it. The pace was perfect, the characters believable, with just enough comedy to keep the reader hooked. It’s not a love story but there are elements of sexual tension and seduction to keep the ladies happy. Rosemary has two equally handsome men trying to help her and you are constantly hoping that she chooses the right one!

For a fun summer read or when you’re just looking for something to pass the time with a great sense of humour, this is the perfect book.

My rating: 4/5
